As soon as the new drug maker's stock price rose by nearly 1 percent in early trading, investors began to wonder how much it could save a little bit of money in the future.
The pharmaceutical giant is looking for a solution to its growing problem of erectile dysfunction, and it's making a fresh attempt to make Viagra a household name. According to Dr. Richard A. Bernstein, a professor of urology at Northwestern University, the pill has been in development for decades.
"There is a lot of evidence that the drug is safe," Bernstein said.
"I don't have a hard time making Viagra a household name, because the market for that is really growing. So if you can make Viagra a household name, you can make Viagra a big money."
Although there is some controversy over the safety of Viagra in the U. S. and Canada, Bernstein said there's enough information to make sure it's safe to use for all patients.
"I think that the vast majority of people will not know about it," Bernstein said.
Dr. Bernstein is the co-author of "The Future of ED: How Drug Development Should Take Place in a Modern Health System," and has worked for drug companies since 1984.
Bernstein said Viagra is the most effective treatment for ED, but that it has to be taken consistently to get the desired results.
"If you're getting a headache, you may need to take Viagra for a couple of days, and then it might be the right time for you to take it, but if you're getting a headache and you don't need Viagra, you're probably not going to be taking it," Bernstein said.
To get started, a patient will need to be in the bedroom with the medication and be at least 18 years old. They'll also need to be in the office with the drug. Doctors will also need to be on a lower dose of the drug, and the patient will need to be on an erectile dysfunction medication at least 18 years old.
When Viagra is approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration, a patient will have to be in the bedroom with the drug. The drug must be taken at least two hours before sexual activity.
If a patient doesn't have erectile dysfunction, Viagra won't be approved for use in the U. but it will be approved for use in Canada and Mexico.
